Fellow Mortals has offered internships since 1992.
Interns from this program have gone on to careers in the fields of Wildlife Rehabilitation, Humane Societies, Veterinary Medicine, Dog Training, Zoo Keeping, Field Biology, Exotic Animal Sanctuaries, and Environmental Education.

Wildlife Care Intern3+ months
InternInterns work primarily with orphaned songbirds, waterfowl and Cottontails. Main duties will include feeding and cleaning of the orphans, facility upkeep and other daily duties, but interns may also assist in education, fundraising, animal transport and supply pick ups. Interns will receive hands-on experience in nutrition, husbandry, species identification and natural history. This position requires a commitment of 45 -50 hours per week depending on patient load. Interns gain valuable experience while helping wildlife and working with Fellow Mortals Professional staff rehabilitators.
Exceptional interns will be given the opportunity to volunteer extra hours in return for additional experience in Education and fundraising, observing examinations and diagnosis, participate in initial treatment, understanding treatment plans and X-ray interpretation.

Qualifications:
Interns must have completed a minimum of three years of college (or be working towards an animal care qualification) and must have their own health insurance. Tetanus vaccinations must be current prior to commencing the internship. Interns must be physically able to lift at least 50 pounds and engage in physically-demanding activities, including working long hours. Internships are for a minimum of three months but longer internships are available and carry more opportunities and a larger stipend. Start dates are flexible.
The work schedule for interns at Fellow Mortals is such that it is impossible to work simultaneously at another job outside the hospital.

Amenities:

A stipend of $500/month* is provided plus housing and utilities.

Housing – each year we rent an apartment or house close to the hospital for the use of interns. Interns will usually share a bedroom. Additional information about housing can be given at the interview.

Payment — *Interns are compensated at 2 rates. Those interns committing to a 3 month internship will be given a stipend of $500/month plus housing and utilities. Interns committing to 4 months or more will be given $500/month for first three months and will then receive $600/month for remaining internship.

Length of Term:
Minimum of three months. Exceptional interns who successfully complete an internship may be offered a staff position (funding dependent).

  Wildlife Rehabilitation Intern 9-12 months
We are looking for an exceptional candidate to fill this internship position. Preference will be given to individuals intending to pursue a career in wildlife rehabilitation; however we also offer Wildlife Care internships for those with broader career intentions.
This position is designed to give experience in all aspects of Wildlife Rehabilitation from animal care to fundraising and education. Primary responsibilities will be animal care, focusing on orphan care (feeding and cleaning) during the spring and summer months; however, the intern will also gain experience in:
  • Species identification, ecology and behavior
  • Species nutrition and husbandry requirements (including caging considerations)
  • Initial exam, triage and critical care
  • Designing Treatment plans
  • Criteria for release and Criteria for release sites
  • Supervision of Wildlife Care Interns
  • Facility upkeep and maintenance
  • Cage set-up for various species
  • Reception - learning how to determine if need help and providing one to one education
  • Assisting staff in preparation for fundraising and education events
  • Participating in fundraising and education events
  • Many other aspects related to the functioning of the hospital on a day to day basis

Interns work ~ 60 hours/week and gain valuable experience while helping wildlife and working with Fellow Mortals Professional staff rehabilitators who will mentor you throughout the internship. This internship is an intense experience and therefore best suited to individuals passionate about animal care and wildlife rehabilitation.

Qualifications:
InternsThis position is best suited for college graduates who will preferably have completed at least one other internship in animal care or have other work experience in animal care.
